www.chinanews.cn 2006-03-01 16:43:45
Chinanews, Mar. 1 - Chinese Minister of Education Zhou Ji announced on
the press conference held by the State Council Information Office on Feb.
28 that local and central finance will add 218.2 billion RMB (US$26.91
billion) of investment in compulsory education in the next five years,
and compulsory education in rural areas will be completely funded by
public finance.
Zhou said that according to current plan, central finance will bear 80%
of new investment while local finance will shoulder 20%. That means the
former have to allot 125.4 billion RMB for compulsory education while the
latter (including eastern regions) will appropriate 92.8 billion RMB.
Zhou added that since 2003, China has been putting greater efforts in
regulating illegal charges in education. It has dispatched a total of
56,000 inspection teams, checked more than 876,000 schools of various
levels and categories, cleared and returned over 1.32 billion RMB of
illegal charges and tackled 19,000 cases involving illegal charges. 5,931
people were punished according to CPC discipline or political discipline,
and 794 schoolmasters were dismissed from their posts.
