Chinanews, Apr.19 - The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the
XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) Executive Vice-President Jiang Xiaoyu briefed the
media on the torch relay on the 18th.
He said that preparations for the torch relay of the Beijing Olympics
officially started in May 2005. This February, the International Olympic
Committee confirmed the torch relay plan of the Beijing Olympics on its
executive board meeting held during the Torino 2006 Winter Olympic Games.
According to this plan, the torch fire of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games
will be fetched from the Ancient Olympia in March 2008 and then go
through 28 cities of the five continents and all provinces, autonomous
regions and municipalities in China, and be carried up to Mount Everest,
the tallest peak in the world. This will be the first time that the
Olympic torch reaches this peak. The torch relay will last over 140 days,
with 15,000 torch bearers participating in the event. The main torch will
be lighted at the main venue of the Beijing Olympic opening ceremony on
August 8, 2008.
At present, BOCOG is deliberating on and planning the torch relay routes
and cities. The committee has jointly set up a special team with related
departments and plans to carry out an expedition to Mount Everest this
May.
