Chinese domain name returns home

Chinanews, Nov. 24 - According to newspaper reports, famous domain name
investor Yao Jinbo spent US$30,000 to buy back the Chinese domain name
".cn". That domain name was registered by a Korean company. Yao
Jinbo said he was willing to donate his newly acquired domain name at no
charge.
A Korean company registered the Chinese domain name on October 13th and
on November 8th authorized www.net.cn to handle the transfer of this
domain name. Yao Jinbo was at that time vice president of www.net.cn and
paid US$30,000 to buy back this Chinese domain name tied to a traditional
festival to move it back to China on November 18th.
Regarding this, relevant experts pointed out the action of this Korean
company clearly indicated its purchase of the domain name was for
investment purpose and netted US$30,000 quite easily.
In fact, in early years, Korean has been beset by problems of domain
names squatters. Western countries snatched domain names of well-known
companies, local specialties and culture and a heavy price was paid to
retrieve some of these. Because of this lesson learned, Koreans began to
pay attention to protect the online registration of its traditional
culture and brand names. Today, Chinese domain names have become the
target of online squatters.
It was learned that following the establishment last year of
international standards of registering Chinese domain names, Microsoft
will support Chinese domain names in its next version of its operating
system. With everything and the environment all set to go, the prospect
of Chinese domain names cannot be underestimated.
