Jan. 23 - Jan. 22, 2006 was the Preliminary Eve, exactly one week before
the Chinese New Year in lunar calendar.
On that day, Beijing's Chaoyang District opened the Gaobeidian grain
water transport dock temple fair and the district's 16th farmers art
festival at the remains of Gaobeidian dock for water transport of grain
to the capital (in feudal times).
The temple fair were suspended for years but has now been resumed and
allows Beijing citizens and tourists to appreciate the unique folk
customs temple fair of towns and villages along both banks of the Great
Channel.
The temple fair is an essential component of the Great Channel culture
and an important phenomenon of folk customs that distinguishes itself
from the imperial city culture.
